Is There a Best Way To Do Something?

by Marie T. Russell, InnerSelf.com

We often think there is one “best” way to do something. After all, the pundits, the influencers, and the hundreds of books written over the years all seem to insist they’ve discovered "the" way — the one true path to losing weight, getting healthy, feeling better, getting rich, and so on.

And many of us, understandably, want the best method, the shortest route, the guaranteed outcome. Who wouldn’t?

We’ve heard it in religion too. There are many religions, yet each claims to be the only real way to salvation, heaven, or enlightenment. If you follow their rules, accept their version of truth, and stay on their path, you will succeed. That’s the promise.

But how can that be? Can there really be only one right answer — one best way — for all of us?

We’re Not Robots, We’re Unique

If we were identical machines, maybe there could be one perfect formula. But we’re not. Each of us has a different history, different emotions, different genetics, different needs. We carry different stories in our head and in our heart. So how could one identical solution apply to every single human being?

I was speaking with a friend recently and casually said I had found the best way to approach a certain situation. She quickly reminded me that I had found the best way "for me". Not necessarily for her, or anyone else. And she was exactly right.

It’s like asking two people to carry a 50-pound bag. One is a 250-pound muscular man, and the other is a petite 115-pound woman. They can both do it, but in completely different ways. There’s no single “best way” — only what works for them, individually.

Trial and Error Is How We Learn

One of the biggest reasons people search for the "best" way is fear. Fear of making a mistake, wasting time, or failing. That’s understandable. But here’s the truth: trial and error isn’t failure — it’s life, it's experience, it's growth.

We don’t need to get it right the first time. Sometimes what worked for us five years ago won’t fit today. We evolve, and so must our choices. Whether it’s a new career, a diet, a spiritual path, or a relationship, we figure it out by doing — and adjusting along the way.

It’s like cooking. You follow a recipe, but maybe you use a little less sugar or substitute an ingredient. The recipe becomes "yours". And so it is with your life. You’re not here to copy someone else’s instructions to the letter. You’re here to create your own "flavor".

Your Inner Compass Knows the Way

There’s no outside expert who can fully know what’s right for you. Even the most well-meaning guru or author is speaking from their own experience. They may offer insight, but it’s only your inner compass that can tell you if something fits.

That compass is often quiet. It shows up as a tug in your gut, a flutter in your heart, a sense of “rightness” or discomfort. Sometimes it’s an unmistakable full-body “yes.” Other times, it’s a quiet whisper to slow down, breathe, and feel what’s true for you.

This is where the magic lies. The best way is not in someone’s five-step plan. It’s not even in what worked for you last year. It’s in tuning in, noticing what feels nourishing — right here and right now — and having the courage to follow it.

There Is Wisdom in Community — And in Discernment

This doesn’t mean we should never take advice. Learning from others is a gift. We can try on ideas, practices, and tools that others have found helpful. But the key is to stay discerning. Don’t hand over your power — borrow ideas, then shape them to fit your own being.

We’re not meant to walk the same path in lockstep. But we are meant to walk side by side, sharing, supporting, and growing together — each in our own rhythm, each with our own vision.

So What’s the Best Way?

The best way is the one that feels connected to you. The one that aligns with your heart. The one that honors your body, your truth, and your journey.

It might be morning meditation. Or running. Or painting. Or laughing with your dog. It might be stillness. It might be change. It might not make sense to anyone else — and that’s okay.

And here’s the other part: it might change. What’s right for you today may shift tomorrow. Life isn’t static. Neither are we. That’s not a flaw. That’s the freedom of our innate wisdom.

Listen. Adjust. Begin Again.

Take a moment today to ask yourself: "What feels right for me, right now?" What needs to be released? What wants to be embraced?

Let that question guide you. Let your body, your breath, your intuition speak — even if it’s just a whisper. And trust that your way — your unique, beautiful, evolving way — is more than enough.

You’re not here to follow the best way. You’re here to follow your way. And then you'll be able to relate to Frank Sinatra as he famously sang, "I did it my way!"

A One-Size-Fits-All Solution?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to life’s questions. Each of us is unique, and our best path emerges through inner listening, experimentation, and trust in ourselves and in our inner guidance. Advice can help, but only you can know what truly fits. Tune in to your own wisdom. Your way is the best way — for you.
